Cave Bear Exhibit
Unearth the mystery of ancient predators that once roamed this region - an exhibit for curious minds and budding paleontologists alike.
Lily The Bear
Meet Lilly, our star attraction—a replica of the real cave bear discovered right here in White Pine County. Towering and ancient, Lilly captures imaginations young and old, offering a prehistoric glimpse into Nevada’s distant past.
Fossils, Footprints, and Prehistoric Legends
Step back into the Ice Age with the Cave Bear exhibit, where bones, casts, and prehistoric stories await. This exhibit is a family-friendly journey into the world of the mighty cave bear, with educational panels, replica skulls, and a glimpse into paleontology tools and techniques.
Kids can get into action with learning areas, while adults can explore how these massive creatures once shaped the ecosystems of the Pleistocene epoch. The exhibit also celebrates “Lily the Bear,” the museum’s iconic figure, who brings a touch of personality and warmth to this ancient story.
- Fun Fact
Did you know cave bears once roamed the White Pine region over 20,000 years ago? Their massive footprints and fossils reveal they were among the largest bears to ever live, inspiring awe and scientific study.
Why It Matters: Footprints of the Past
The Cave Bear exhibit helps make science accessible to children and families by blending storytelling and regional prehistory. Ice Age fossils found in Nevada reveal a time when mammoths, saber-toothed cats, and massive bears lived where we now walk and build. By exploring these ancient worlds, visitors develop an appreciation for how climate, biology, and geography intersect over time.
This exhibit also supports early STEM education through discovery and interaction, encouraging future scientists, geologists, and conservationists. Most importantly, it roots children in the idea that their hometown sits on ground shaped by ancient forces—and that their curiosity can uncover powerful stories hiding just beneath the surface.

"Really nice collection! I did not include pictures of everything, so you will need to visit to see all the treasures they have. The x-ray machine is stunning! They also have a complete Knights Templar uniform that is beautifully displayed. The one room schoolhouse is lovely. Really cool horse drawn manure spreader. Can see it all in couple hours."

"This is an awesome museum. We originally stopped on our way through Ely, NV just to pass the time and check out the complete skeleton of the Cave Bear that is on display, which we did and it was magnificent. I didn't expect to be leaving this museum 2 1/2 hours later. There is so much to see here. "
