Tracks of Progress and Community
The Railroad exhibit highlights the crucial role that railroads—especially the Nevada Northern Railway—played in shaping White Pine County’s economy and identity. Explore vintage locomotives, historic photographs, and artifacts from the golden age of rail travel and mining transport. The exhibit showcases how the railway enabled the movement of ore, goods, and people, turning Ely into a vital hub in the American West.
Visitors also learn about the lives of railroad workers and the engineering feats required to traverse rugged landscapes. Displays reveal the technology behind steam engines and the cultural impact of railroads on small-town life.
- Fun Fact
The Nevada Northern Railway is one of the best-preserved historic railroads in the U.S., still operating steam locomotives that offer visitors a ride back in time through White Pine County.
Why It Matters: Driving Economic Growth and Cultural Connection
Railroads were the arteries of progress in White Pine County, making mining operations viable and linking remote communities to national markets. The Nevada Northern Railway, in particular, stands as a testament to industrial innovation and regional development. This exhibit illustrates how the railroad fostered economic prosperity, population growth, and cultural exchange, becoming a symbol of American ingenuity and determination.
Preserving this history honors the workers and visionaries who built these vital connections and reminds visitors of the transformative power of transportation infrastructure in shaping modern America.

"Really nice collection! I did not include pictures of everything, so you will need to visit to see all the treasures they have. The x-ray machine is stunning! They also have a complete Knights Templar uniform that is beautifully displayed. The one room schoolhouse is lovely. Really cool horse drawn manure spreader. Can see it all in couple hours."

"This is an awesome museum. We originally stopped on our way through Ely, NV just to pass the time and check out the complete skeleton of the Cave Bear that is on display, which we did and it was magnificent. I didn't expect to be leaving this museum 2 1/2 hours later. There is so much to see here. "
