Ranching & Equipment
Discover the tools and traditions that shaped life on the Nevada frontier ranches.
Life on the Range
The Ranching & Equipment exhibit offers a look at the rugged lifestyle of ranchers who tamed White Pine County’s wide-open spaces. Explore authentic saddles, branding irons, and cattle-handling gear alongside photographs and stories of families who built their livelihoods from the land. The exhibit traces ranching’s evolution—from hand tools and horse power to mechanized equipment—highlighting how innovation and hard work sustained communities through harsh climates and economic challenges.
Visitors can imagine the daily rhythms of cowboy life, the importance of livestock, and the deep connection between people and place that defines Nevada’s ranching heritage.
- Fun Fact
Before tractors, cowboys relied on horses for everything—rounding up cattle, repairing fences, and transporting supplies. The tools on display tell stories of life lived with grit and ingenuity on the open range.
Why It Matters: Backbone of White Pine’s Economy and Culture
Ranching has been a cornerstone of White Pine County since its earliest settlement, providing food, jobs, and a unique cultural identity. The equipment and techniques showcased reveal the resourcefulness and resilience needed to survive and thrive in a demanding environment. This exhibit honors generations of ranchers who contributed to regional growth and helped maintain open landscapes that remain vital today.
Ranching traditions also connect White Pine to the broader story of the American West, embodying values of independence, stewardship, and community. Understanding this heritage deepens appreciation for the challenges and triumphs of rural life.

"Really nice collection! I did not include pictures of everything, so you will need to visit to see all the treasures they have. The x-ray machine is stunning! They also have a complete Knights Templar uniform that is beautifully displayed. The one room schoolhouse is lovely. Really cool horse drawn manure spreader. Can see it all in couple hours."

"This is an awesome museum. We originally stopped on our way through Ely, NV just to pass the time and check out the complete skeleton of the Cave Bear that is on display, which we did and it was magnificent. I didn't expect to be leaving this museum 2 1/2 hours later. There is so much to see here. "
